White House Kitchen Staff Weight Loss (Video, Photos) Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama


Four White House kitchen staff members have collectively lost 110 pounds in 18 months. They credit First Lady Michelle Obama and her Let’s Move! childhood obesity initiative as their source of inspiration and motivation. The story was first broken by the AP and has gone viral. On the Today Show, on Friday, November 4, 2011, the staff — three White House chefs and an assistant curator — were interviewed in a report by NBC’s Kristen Welker, and shared their weight loss tips.

Assistant pastry chef Susie Morrison has lost 30 pounds. To stay in shape and maintain the weight loss, she now rides her bike 13 miles to work every day. She said of the transformation, “I’m so excited.” She is a self-described Cookie Monster.

Head chef Adam Collick has also lost 30 pounds. He said, “We try to live by [First Lady Michelle Obama’s] example. If she can be healthier and work out every day with her schedule, we should be able to do the same thing.”

Chriseta Comerford has lost 15 pounds. Her motivation, “I wanted to be healthier. I want to be there when my daughter gets married.” Her advice to others, “Just get started because every morning is a new day.”

All three credit healthier food choices and more exercise as the key to their success.

Noted in the story; the biggest challenge for the chefs, they have to taste the food before they serve it, including all batches of cookies. Comerford says that she now takes smaller morsels to taste.
