Natalie Strawn has lost 282 pounds thus far, representing slightly more than half of her original body weight, in a weight loss journey she began three years ago when she was 17 years old. Now 20, she is still losing weight.
Not surprisingly, this inspiring story received media coverage in her home town of Omaha, Nebraska, and now has gone viral in recent weeks. She made an appearance on Good Morning America on Monday, December 12, 2011 and was interviewed live in the studio alongside her mother, Rita, who is also losing weight.
As the video (below) revealed, she had been turning to food for comfort since she was a child and gained weight steadily, as she ate large quantities of food. She described a typical breakfast: “I would make nachos and I would take half a can to a whole can of refried beans, a whole bag of chips, whole pound bag of cheese and smother it in ranch dressing.” She was bullied and eventually dropped out of school at age 16 and through home schooling received her GED. When she embarked on her weight loss journey at age 17 she had topped the scales at 552 pounds. She talked about what she had missed out in her life — learning to drive, going to the prom and high school homecoming.
She joined Weight Watchers and said the key to success for her was to set small 5-pound weight loss goals and chronicle her progress with a video diary.
During the live studio interview with ABC’s Lara Spencer, she said, “I have learned if you want something bad enough you will get it.”
Regarding her diet and meal plan, she said, “What I like is the freedom and flexibility. There’s no food that’s off limits. I can eat what I want just watch portion control.” She noted that the “bad stuff” is not in the house.
As for exercise she said that she had to lose 100 pounds before she could start. She began with 18-minute chair aerobics sessions. She now walks 2 miles and does an exercise DVD.
She said her dream weight is 168. Asked how she stays motivated, she said, “I have my faith. If I can do it, anyone can do it. I’m determined.” She added, “If I can do it everyone can do it because I don’t like to do things that are hard.”
