Michael Giannulis 255 Pound Weight Loss: Chris Powell GMA Interview (Video)

Trainer and transformation specialist Chris Powell was interviewed by Robin Roberts on Good Morning America on July 2, 2012, (video below) and discussed Michael Giannulis’ 255 pound weight loss, revealed in an episode of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. The 28-year-old business consultant from Tarpon, Springs, Florida had a starting weight of 493 pounds and a final weight of 238 pounds after only 365 days; more than half of his original weight.

Chris Powell talked about why and how he succeeded. He noted that his close-knit family joined him in his efforts and collectively several family members, including his mother and brother, lost more than 400 pounds in that same year. He said that’s beauty of a support system and how powerful it is when you put it all together. He noted that instead of family meals they got together for sporting and recreational activities.

He recommends creating a support system for anyone who wants to lose weight through permanent lifestyle changes. “No man is an island; we can’t do it alone. As the process goes on life happens and we need to reach out to share.” He noted that there are online support groups as well for those who can’t find support among family and friends.

Robin Roberts asked how Michael Giannulis is doing now. He’s doing well. He lost a little bit of his purpose and gained a few pounds back. He says that he caught himself as he realized he was falling into his previous behavioral patterns and giving in to social triggers. “They were feeding the addiction again,” he said. He said that Giannulis moved from his Floria home to Arizona and now lives down the street from him. In making the move, he’s back on track and doing well.

Chris Powell added, “The more you can create that support system around you, the better. Food is his addiction but the trigger is social events.” He also spoke about the importance of what he calls the SMART approach. The letters spell out the process of goal setting: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-sensitive.

Chris Powell’s approach to diet and exercise has been successful for the show participants. It’s the carb cycle diet outlined and detailed in full in his book Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution and the workout seen in the show is revealed in the DVD Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition: The Workout.

While diet and exercise plans are important, he stressed foremost in the interview the importance of setting goals and establishing a support system. It’s hard to go alone and forums and other online resources are essential. I found that to be the case when I relapsed after having successfully maintained a weight loss for fifteen years. In my case, I have followed successfully John McDougall’s Starch Solution, a low-fat plant-based whole foods diet plan and I found the online forum a wonderful resource. The weight is gone and the determination and the mindset are intact! But no matter where we are on the diet and weight loss spectrum and our individual preference for the diet that works best for us, it is always about the mindset; there are always the triggers in our lives that may send us back into old patterns. It is that challenged that we all face.
