Today Show nutritionist Joy Bauer made an appearance on the June 11, 2012 (video above) to share of of the successful weight management tips from members of the Joy Fit Club. Her recently published book, Joy Fit Club: Cookbook, Diet Plan and Inspiration is a chronicle of the weight loss success of Joy Fit Club members who have lost the pounds and kept them off through lifestyle changes.
She culled a few of the tips which address some of the underlying challenges of weight management — from emotional eating to getting enough exercise throughout the day. She cites Kim who lost 110 pounds and who has now become a personal trainer. She has a method for overcoming cravings; it’s a brown paper bag filled with note cards that list a variety of random activities. If she has a craving, she reaches in the bag, picks a card with a an activity; it might be to take a 10 minute walk, to read a chapter from a book or call a friend. By the time she completes the activity the craving is gone.
Not getting enough exercise? Joy Bauer has another successful club member, Cheri, who lost 141 pounds. She spends commercial breaks on television doing exercises; she walks in place, does push-ups, crunches and burns about 20 calories per commercial. Yes, this does add up; an hour long show could burn 100 calories, not to mention counteract the dangerous effects of sitting too long; losing weight aside, recent studies have shown that even if we are diligent in daily exercise it is not enough to compensate for hours of sitting.
