Academy Award and Grammy winning actress-singer Jennifer Hudson is sharing her weight loss and diet tips in the cover story of the September 2011 issue of SELF Magazine.
She talks about the inspiration for embarking upon her 80 pound weight loss journey and shares the workout and diet she followed to lose the weight and now, to successfully remain on a weight management diet as she has for the past several months. To date, it is her most revealing interview on the subject, and includes her specific workout plan and meal plans. It gives us a very helpful glimpse of the daily practices of a weight loss success.
UPDATE: Her new book has been published: I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me DownI remember one of my first times on a red carpet, an interviewer asked, ‘How does it feel to be plus-sized in Hollywood?’ I looked around, like, Who is she talking to? Oh, me? I’m plus-sized? In the neighborhood I’m from in Chicago, a 16 is normal. But in Hollywood, everyone looks exactly the same, so I stood out.
This is not a surprise. It’s a documented phenomena known as distorted weight perception; studies have show that people do not have an accurate self-assessment of their weight and where it may fall in the normal – overweight – obese – morbidly obese spectrum. Therein lies the problem, a failure to recognize when excess pounds may be endangering your health, especially when those in your immediate social milieu may also be above normal in weight.
Jennifer Hudson also revealed what her motivation was to lose the weight for good:
“It really started when I was pregnant with David, who’s 2 now, and I thought, Hold on, why doesn’t anybody know I’m pregnant? And I wanted to set a good example for my son. Right after I had him, I began trying to change things.
She talked about the initial steps she took, literally four days after giving birth to her son she began walking 30 minutes a day. To avoid boredom with the routine, she intensified it:
“When I didn’t want to be cooped up in the gym, I’d come up with other options. I’d ask myself, What do I love? I love being outside and feeling free, so I would jog or ride my bike. Some days, I’d play basketball and tennis.”
She described her current workout routine which combines strength training and cardio:
“On days when I’m short on time, I do this workout called trilogy, which is cardio and strength combined: I do 25 squats, 25 push-ups and 25 ab moves, then rest a minute. Then I do them in reverse and rest another minute. Fifteen minutes and I’m done! And I create moments of exercise. When I lived on the 26th floor, I’d walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator.”
With the high diet failure rate, we are curious to know what Jennifer Hudson does to maintain her weight. According to her imdb.com biography, height is 5’9″ — she has not revealed her current weight nor her starting weight. She eats approximately 1,600 to 1,800 calories daily for maintenance. A sample meal plan from Day 2 consists of 1,688 total calories.
BREAKFAST (375 calories)
Egg-White Scramble with an English muffin and turkey bacon
LUNCH (419 calories)
Grilled Chicken Salad
DINNER (456 calories)
Shrimp stir-fry 5 oz shrimp
Plus two snacks totaling (418 calories); an apple with peanut butter and Greek yogurt with fruit

Reflecting on her success she shared words to inspire others:
“I can’t care about whether I’m too big for some or too small for others. It goes back to how you feel about yourself. I like me the way I am. For anyone who wants to lose: Dude, if I can do it, you can do it. And for those who want to stay the same, I hope I can be an example to you, too; I was proud of being a big girl … It’s like my mother said: ‘Well, honey, when there is a will, there is a way.’ You have to want it. I’m prouder of my weight loss than my Oscar! I hope it has inspired people.”
While that Oscar versus weight loss comparison has been widely discussed in the blogosphere, I can understand and appreciate what she is saying. Professional success and achievement milestones are essential, and yet we can have a disparity in our lives, where we have not been able to bring that same discipline and focus to making positive changes for our health. And, of course, sadly there is discrimination against the overweight and obese in the workplace — as in Hollywood — and it can pose limits on your life, some of which can be measured in dollars and cents, as revealed in a recent study.
She addressed this topic as well:
You never know you’re being discriminated against until you see what you’ve been deprived of. Everybody wants you to wear this or put you on the cover of that. Before, my career was great, but since losing weight, I haven’t stopped. I have worked every single day of this year.”
