Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar and Grammy winning actress made an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 to talk about her weight loss success and to share diet and exercise tips that have helped her succeed in losing 80 pounds, and dropping from a size 16 to a size 6. She is also the author of a newly published memoir, I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down, which chronicles her weight loss journey as well as her rise to success from American Idol season 3 hopeful to Academy Award winning actress in Dreamgirls, as well as how she has coped with the tragic murder of her mother, brother and nephew in 2008.
Along with sharing the diet tips and tricks, she also talked about motivation and inspiration and how she has helped dozens of members of her extended family to lose weight as well; before and after weight loss photos were impressive. While acknowledging the pressures in the entertainment industry to be thin, she talked about how giving birth to her son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., and wanting to set a good example for him, as well as get her body back in shape after pregnancy were her own impetus to lose weight for good.
Regarding the best foods for dieters, Dr. Oz concurred with the Weight Watchers approach which encourages consumption of low calorie, nutrient dense foods. In the Weight Watchers lexicography they are known as “power foods.” Among them are foods that are high in fiber, water content and/or protein content. Typical examples are all all fresh, frozen or canned fruit without added sugar; most fresh, frozen or canned vegetables without added sugar or oil, wild rice and brown rice, broth based soups, lean meats, etc.
This approach, which Weight Watchers incorporated several years ago in the core program, derives from the principles of Penn State nutritionist Dr. Barbara Rolls’ Volumetrics Diet, which puts a focus on consuming these low calorie high satiety foods for long-term weight loss and weight management success.
Video of Jennifer Hudson talking about her favorite recipes incorporating these power foods — including buckwheat pancakes, Italian turkey burgers, mini chocolate chip cookies, sweet potato fries and no noodle vegetable lasagna — can be found here.
