Jacqui McCoy is featured in the season 2 episode 2 of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. The 31-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, Florida has a compelling year-long weight loss journey under the guidance of Chris Powell, the transformation specialist and trainer, revealed in the two-hour episode which had its broadcast premiere on Sunday, June 10, 2012 on ABC. A video recap is at the end of this article.
We learn that Jacqui McCoy’s starting weight is 355 and her motivation to lose is to achieve her goals which include having children with her husband, Shawn, a fireman and paramedic, and reviving her abandoned aspiration to be a musical theater singer. She has lost confidence in herself and does not like to be seen in public as she is ashamed of her weight gain. As she begins to deal with her emotional issues, she comes to the understanding that her weight gain began when she was 14 years old, and was raped at a party. Thereafter, she began turning to food — sugar and candy — to cope.

Her weight loss is nothing less than spectacular. In the course of a year she went from a starting weight of 355 pounds to a final weight of 148 pounds — a total of 207 pounds. She hit all of her interim goals and by the nine month weigh-in she had already lost more than half of her body weight and was down to 175 pounds. The 148 pounds represents a total percentage of 58 percent of the original 355 pound body weight. In so doing she set a record on this program as well as all other weight loss reality TV programs including NBC’s The Biggest Loser.
She discussed this achievement in a recent article where we also learn that as a result of her outstanding efforts she has been hired by the program to work at their Mesa, Arizona training facility. She speaks of the importance of acknowledging the emotional and mental component of weight loss; in her words, “We’re battling our brains, not our bodies.” Read the full article here.
As always, the question arises, how did Jacqui McCoy lose so much weight? What was her exercise and diet plan. As do all of the participants, she was put on a rigorous workout schedule; roughly five hours a day. She used the Chris Powell carb cycle plan. It is detailed in his new book Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution;

I found this episode quite compelling, as one who has also struggled with food addictions and turning to food for comfort. The battle with the brain, not the body is quite resonant. Food addiction — specifically to foods high in sugar and fat — we are learning from research studies emerging in recent years is just as real as cocaine, heroin or nicotine addiction and so the struggle is not one of mere will power.
