Watch an interview (video below) with Irene Rubaum-Keller, LMFT, author of Foodaholic: The Seven Stages to Permanent Weight Loss. She is a licensed psychotherapist with more than two decades of experience working with people to help them overcome their food addiction, and in losing weight and maintaining it. She speaks from experience, having lost 50 pounds and kept it off for 20 years.
In the interview, she shares her weight loss journey and her moment of truth, and is candid in discussing the addiction to food that led to weight gain over the course of time. Her candor about her own experience is enormously helpful, as we may feel we are alone in our struggles with food. Yet, as one who knows, it can be not just frustrating, but absolutely demoralizing and depressing to experience such a loss of control when trying — and failing — to resist the trigger foods.
She outlines some strategies for coming to grips with these destructive habits. She recommends writing down what you are eating and counting calories as holding yourself accountable is crucial, especially when it comes to the food you are eating.
She does not recommend dieting, and especially not deprivation diets or liquid diets or any such diet that can’t be sustained when it’s time to maintain the weight loss. Instead what is needed is to make permanent changes, to move away from the trigger foods that lead to binging. Alas, we know those foods, they are often processed foods or rich indulgent “comfort foods” that are loaded with sugar, fat and/or salt. These impact our brain chemistry in the same manner as alcohol or cocaine, as recent studies have shown and the addiction is as real as that of the alcoholic or the drug addict.
