Can financial incentives help you keep your New Year’s Resolutions? That’s a question that has not only been posed, but has been put into practice — in many cases successfully — especially by corporate wellness programs.
Being paid to lose weight might give you that extra edge to stay on track and honor your commitment. After all getting free money may indeed make it easier to resist that trigger food or that extra helping, or give you the extra motivation to not skip your workout.
If you are in a company with such a program, you may want to consider joining. Literally, what do you have to lose but weight, while gaining some extra spending money!
ABC News has a compelling and detailed report on this phenomena. And don’t worry; if you are not working for a company with such an incentive, there are a number of Web sites and mobile apps that enable you to hold yourself accountable to get some financial rewards. Among those mentioned in the roundup is the popular StickK.com, which enables you to meet a variety of personal goals, not just those related to weight loss, health and fitness.
And there’s another one that’s of note, according to ABC News:
Not to be outdone, two Harvard classmates launched GymPact a year ago. It was a free iPhone check-in app that rewards people for going to the gym, started by Yifan Zhang and Geoff Oberhofer.
Now GymPact, based in San Francisco with five employees, has launched an Android app today and boasts that it has motivated more than 750,000 workouts in 2012. Over 100,000 people signed up for GymPact in 2012.
