Drew Manning, the Fit2Fat2Fit trainer who famously gained 70+ pounds and lost it to demonstrate how made an appearance on The View on Tuesday to discuss his journey with the co-hosts Barbara Walters, Whoopie Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
Having achieved the goal, and ending with a 52-week final weight of 190 pounds — the personal fitness trainer began at 193 pounds on a six-foot-two frame and ended up weighing 265 pounds — he has chronicled it in his newly published book, Fit2Fat2Fit: The Unexpected Lessons from Gaining and Losing 75 lbs on Purpose.
He told the co-hosts of his motivation for undertaking this mission; to learn firsthand why his clients struggled with exercise and weight loss. There had been a disconnect, he said, as he had never had a problem with his weight and could not fully understand. Beginning in May 2011, he did no exercise at all and ate all processed foods — white bread, white pasta, cereals, soda, etc — fast food only once or twice a week. By the end of six months not only had he put on substantial weight, but his 34 inch waist expanded to 48 inches. Drew Manning’s before and after weight loss pictures are here. Watch video below.
With his wife, Lynn, in the front row of the audience, offering some input from her perspective, both spoke of the unexpected psychological toll it took on him as a husband and father. She said the bigger he got, the bigger the problems; he lost energy to help around the house and lost self confidence. He acknowledged the loss of self-confidence and self-esteem and said he also found it heartbreaking to see his baby daughter cry when he couldn’t keep up with her.
Losing the weight was hard, and it was hard to begin to eat healthy again, Drew Manning said. He had become addicted to Cinnamon Toast cereal and Mountain Dew soda, both of which he quit cold turkey, noting it was hell for the first week. In the second segment, after the commercial break, he had a chance to share some of the weight loss tips that enabled him to achieve his goal. He discussed how he was able to lose weight by eating six meals every three hours of whole foods; no processed foods. He stresses the importance of spending an hour at a time to fix three days worth of meals.
