Dr. Mark Hyman: How Eating Organic Food Helps Weight Loss (Video)

In a video message, Mark Hyman, M.D. discusses the profoundly negative effect pesticides have on our bodies, promoting weight gain and why and how eating organic foods will foster weight loss. Author of the newly published book, The Blood Sugar Solution, he has written several previous New York Times bestsellers — including a book addressing weight loss, The UltraSimple Diet: Kick-Start Your Metabolism and Safely Lose Up to 10 Pounds in 7 Days.

As part of a series of videos outlining some of the key concepts of the new book, he takes the time to explain why it is that avoiding pesticides can actually help us lose weight. By now we know, avoid processed foods that comprise the standard American diet and eat more plant-based whole foods. But there is another dimension to the shift towards healthy eating. Avoiding pesticides.

He notes firstly that pesticides can impact the thyroid gland, actually slowing down metabolism — the last thing we want when we are trying to lose weight! We are focused on speeding it up with our workouts, our “fat burning foods” and even a few natural supplements here and there. To think that an invisible, colorless, odorless chemical could derail us is certainly unnerving.

He goes on to note that as we are losing weight our bodies are releasing the pesticides that had been stored as body fat, putting more toxins into the blood stream to impact us all the more — perhaps even a factor in frustrating weight loss plateaus.

Toxins promote inflammation which in turn promotes weight loss, and leads to insulin resistance which eventually can lead to diabetes. Toxins also slow down the mitochondria of the cells, which are responsible for the energy production needed to burn fat.

He continues in the video laying out more little-known facts about pesticides and strongly recommends we avoid them. If you can only afford — or have access to — some produce that is organic, he strongly recommends picking from conventional produce with the least amount of pesticides. The EWG has put out a highly recommended listing of produce, alerting us to what’s known as the “Dirty Dozen” — produce with the most pesticides which should always be avoided, as well as the “Clean 15” which have the least amount of pesticides.
