Diet Tips from Trainer Chris Powell, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition

Trainer Chris Powell shares diet tips for motivation and success in weight loss. His new program, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition will have its premiere on Mon. May 30 on ABC.   Known for his work with on 650 Lb. Virgin, on TLC, helping David Smith achieve a 410 pound weight loss, he then used his experience with Smith to create the Reshape the Nation plan. The diet plan is outlined in a new book, Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution.

The new program chronicles his work with the “super obese” — people who have around 200 pounds to lose or a BMI of 50 — over the course of a year.

In a recent interview (video above) Chris Powell talked about key components for such dramatic, transformational results. He says weight loss must begin with the mind. It is crucial to address the true reasons why you are overweight — he cited David Smith as an example, that when he began to become aware of previously unknown childhood trauma, he began to lose weight fast.

With his work with the Extreme Makeover participants, he notes that it is important to address your immediate environment and triggers that may be defeating your efforts. This must be done first, before you can create a diet and exercise plan for weight loss that will work for you.

Other helpful tips he offers helpful to anyone on a weight loss journey — cut out refined carbohydrates, drink a gallon of water a day (work up to that amount as a goal), and never skip breakfast. Schedule in your workout time and stick to it, walk as much as possible. He also recommends two days a week of strength training.
