Chris Powell is the trainer and transformation expert featured on the ABC reality TV show, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. In a recent video (below) he discusses the No. 1 success tip that has enabled participants — considered “super obese” who must lose at least 200 pounds — on the program to lose extraordinary amounts of weight — yes, at times, 200+ pounds — in just one-year, under his guidance and coaching.
It is not the diet — outlined in his new book Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution — or the hours of cardio and weight training, he says. The transformation happens in the mind; exercise and nutrition are an afterthought. It’s the belief in self. Speaking of participants on the program, he notes that they truly need to believe they can do it, and that belief comes and goes throughout the process. People may lose faith, but they are able to resurrect the faith in self. The one magic ingredient is people believing in themselves.

No matter where we are as far as weight loss, weight management or even weight gain, the same lesson does apply; the believe that we can achieve what we have set our mind to achieve in spite of the challenges which are not entirely psychological. Foods high in sugar, fat, and salt — the ubiquitous processed foods that are pushed on us through relentless marketing, and that are so widely available — are as physically addictive as drugs and pose a real challenge. A complete withdraw from these foods might be necessary for the sake of sanity and success. Whatever diet we might choose, as Chris Powell has pointed out, it is the belief in self that is most important of all.
