Chris Powell, the transformation specialist and fitness trainer who is known for his program on ABC, Extreme Makeover Weight Loss edition. shared two extreme weight loss success stories on Good Morning America on Thursday, January 3, 2013. He is also the author of the book Choose to Lose: The 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution, outlining the diet used by many successful participants on the reality TV show,
Both participants were present live in the studio to reveal their dramatic physical transformations and talk about the experience with ABC’s Lara Spencer and Josh Elliot.
The two who were featured were Missy Hendricks and Richard Neal. Hendricks, 33, had been overweight since childhood — called “battleship” and other names by bullying peers — and by age 20 weighed around 300 pounds. She met and married a man she met online. Within a year, he cheated on her and she took solace in emotional eating, binge eating such foods as Honey Combs, consuming a family-size box. During the ordeal of the painful divorce she continued to binge and eventually was weighing 526 pounds at 5-foot-eight. Today, in studio, she emerged looking quite different at 131 pounds.
Richard Neal weighed 426 pounds by the time he was 28 years old. He was also a binge eater. He grew up overweight as a child, and said that he had a history of “eating my worries and pain away.” His wake-up call came through shock and fear. His doctor told him that unless he made changed, he would not live to see thirty and he would not have children. His turning point came when a friend lent him a workout DVD and he tried it, and thus began his transformation to where he is now, at 200 pounds.
